Mouse Mod
I was tired of the red light in my Logitech optical mouse, so I changed it.  It always bugged me that everything else on my work desk (laptop, cellphone/pda, external hd, etc) were BLUE, but the mouse was RED.  Now my whole desk matches (and I get more geek points).

I swapped the standard 5mm red led with a high-brightness (6000 mcd) blue one.  Not only does it look cooler, but it seems to work better on a variety of surfaces.

While I had the mouse apart, I also removed the annoying 'clicker' on the scroll wheel.  Now it scrolls much more smoothly and quietly.

Photos of the mod are in the hobbies gallery.

Automating a digital camera
I purchased a cheapo digital camera from wal-mart with the intention of hacking it apart and automating it to snap pictures every few seconds.  The plan was to mount it to a car or kite and produce flash photography.  (sure my real digital camera can take time lapse photo's but I didnt want that $$$ camera dangling from a kite.)

The camrea before any alterations.

Located the shutter switch and confirmed that simply shorting it would snap a picture.  Unsoldered the leads.

Devised a circuit based on a 555-Timer chip to short out the shutter switch at a calculated interval.

Close up of the test circuit(s)

Once it was working, I transfered the circuit to a small piece of perf board.

more pictures will be uploaded soon.
